Can you use mockups on Etsy?

You can still use mockups on Etsy in many cases. Under Etsy's current listing photo rules, most listings also need at least one unedited photo of the real item, and printables and print-on-demand products follow their own rules.
Etsy tightened its Listing Image Requirements policy in October 2026 and explained the changes in the Seller Handbook. The idea behind it is simple: every image has to show buyers what they'll really get. For poster and printable sellers, that mostly means showing your mockups next to something real, like a photo of the print or a flat preview of the file. If you're still choosing scenes, our roundup of the best poster mockups is a good place to start.
Instead of walking through the policy line by line, let's build a listing that follows the rules, one image slot at a time, and then look at the few things that change depending on what you sell.
Everything here links to Etsy's own pages, so you can check it yourself. This isn't legal advice, and Etsy updates its rules from time to time, so take a quick look at the policy before you update your shop.
Etsy's photo rule in one picture
Here's what Etsy's listing photo requirements ask for, in plain words:
- One unedited photo for most products. Your listing needs at least one unedited photo of the actual item against a real background. Some product types have their own rules, and we cover the ones that matter for mockups below.
- Every image has to be accurate. All listing images must show the item's true color, condition, scale and materials.
- Editing is fine for your other photos. Apart from the unedited one, you can adjust lighting or color, crop, resize or change the background, including with AI tools, as long as the result stays accurate.
- Misleading images can cost you. If a buyer opens a case because the item is materially different from your images, Etsy may refund the buyer and you may be responsible for the amount. Etsy may also remove misleading listings.
- Old listings count too. If any of your listings don't meet the current rules, Etsy says you'll need to update them.
Etsy's own examples make the point well. A piece of wall art shown as a real, unedited photo next to an AI-edited room scene is allowed. That's basically what a poster mockup is, so it works as long as the scene shows the art as it really is.

One listing image set for any poster or printable
Whatever you sell, the same four image slots cover most of it: the real thing, a mockup of the same design, details and sizes, and what's included.
1. The real thing. For a print you ship, that's an unedited photo of the actual print against a real background. For a printable, it's a flat preview of the real file with nothing added. This is the image that shows buyers exactly what they get.
2. Mockups of the same design. A poster mockup helps buyers picture your print at home. Put your actual file in and don't change it. Keep the size true to life too, because scale is part of Etsy's accuracy rule, so an A4 print shouldn't look like it covers a whole wall. And only show a frame if buyers can actually order one.
3. Details and sizes. A close-up so buyers can see the detail, and an image that shows the real size or the sizes you offer.
4. What's included. Say whether it's a digital file or a physical print, list the file sizes or page count, and say whether the frame comes with it.
A few things apply to all the Etsy mockups you upload. The unedited image doesn't have to come first, but Etsy recommends making your first photo the clearest, most realistic view of what buyers get. If you used AI to edit any listing photos, Etsy suggests saying so in your description. And by uploading images, you confirm you have all the rights you need to them, mockups included.
What's different depending on what you sell
Printables and digital downloads
Etsy's policy says digital downloads "should include a visual preview or excerpt of the content buyers will receive," so keep that flat preview. Etsy doesn't mention mockups for digital downloads by name, but our reading is that a digital product mockup showing your real design, unchanged, works as an extra preview.
Print-on-demand
If a production partner prints your original design on a standard base product, you may use a stock photo mockup "if the stock photo's owner has authorized its use." Etsy's examples are a t-shirt and a mug, not posters. Etsy also asks you to disclose your production partner in your listings.
Prints you ship yourself
You need at least one unedited photo of the real print, and a mockup can't replace it. Etsy's Seller Policy asks for your own photographs, "not stock photos, artistic renderings, or photos used by other sellers or sites," with limited exceptions. If you make custom prints to order, show real finished prints you've made before.
Poster mockups for Etsy
If you sell wall art, printables or print-on-demand posters, a good poster mockup for Etsy helps buyers picture your design at home. That's what we build at Mockuuups.
Browse our poster mockups or the wider print mockups collection to find a scene and size that fits your shop.
Not every print belongs in a living room. If your designs feel more urban, try a street or a concrete floor. Both of these scenes show an A3 print in a frame:
A3 frame mockup on asphalt with yellow road markings
A3 poster mockup on a concrete floor with rocks
Mockuuups lets you export mockups with your own designs and use those images in your Etsy listings. What you can't do is sell the mockups themselves.
If that sounds useful, have a look around and see if a scene fits your style.
FAQ
Can you use mockups on Etsy?
Often, yes, but it depends on what you sell. Print-on-demand sellers can use stock mockups the owner has authorized, digital downloads need a preview of the real content, and most other listings need at least one unedited photo of the actual item. Every image has to show accurately what the buyer will receive.
Do digital downloads need an unedited photo?
Not in the usual way. They have their own rule: include a visual preview or excerpt of the content buyers will receive. Digital items with nothing visual, like audio files, can use representative imagery as long as it isn't misleading.
Can print-on-demand sellers use stock mockups on Etsy?
Yes, if a production partner prints your original design on a standard base product and the stock photo's owner has authorized its use.
Can I use Mockuuups mockups in my Etsy listings?
Yes. You can export a Mockuuups mockup with your own design in it and use that image in your Etsy listing. You can't resell the mockup files or templates themselves.
Can I use AI to edit my Etsy listing photos?
Yes, for every photo except your required unedited one, as long as the item still looks the way it really is.
Does the unedited photo have to be the first photo?
No. Etsy asks for at least one unedited photo and doesn't say where it goes.
Do I need to update my existing Etsy listings?
Yes, if they don't meet the current requirements. Etsy says you'll need to update them, and you may have to cover a refund if a buyer gets an item that's materially different from your images.
What happens if my listing photos are misleading?
If a buyer opens a case, Etsy may refund the buyer and you may be responsible for the amount. Etsy may also remove misleading listings, and repeated violations can lead to further action, up to removing your shop.
